hymnal

Monday evening I got through with a recording session at midnight, had chilaquiles, and dozed a bit as Catherine drove me to Houston. After a few hours' sleep, I had breakfast with Jason Young, Patrick Watts, and a Big Important Guy at Lifeway Publishing. We ate beautiful omelettes. We caught up a bit. Oh, and we talked about doing arrangements for Lifeway's new edition of the Baptist Hymnal, due out sometime next year.

Finally, I get to get my hands on "God Of Earth And Outer Space!"

So, once you got your hands on it, what did you do? Do you like it or hate it?

Heh - well it hasn't happened yet, actually. This was only the exploratory meeting.

But I'm a bit torn about GOEAOS: on one hand, it seems to be the very symbol of those clunky attempts by churches to be up-to-date and relevant, only to fail miserably.

On the other hand, it is the Baptist church's greatest gift to kids, far surpassing RAs, GAs, and the Super-Humongous Pizza Pigout. There are very few people my age who grew up Baptist who don't crack up at a reference to hymn number 20.

That said, I actually don't have any choice at all in the choosing of material — I'm just a hired hand.

God of power, God of might, God of rockets firing bright!! — not quite William Blake, but it does have a certain thrust to it.
